RED TOOTH TRIGGERFISH

The Redtooth Triggerfish (Odonus niger), also known as the Niger Triggerfish, is a sleek, open-water species recognized for its deep blue to purple coloration, lyre-shaped tail, and characteristic red teeth, which are often visible when it opens its mouth. Found in the Indo-Pacific, this triggerfish adds both beauty and movement to large marine tanks.

It can grow up to 50 cm in length, but most captive specimens stay closer to 30–35 cm, requiring a minimum tank size of 400 liters, though larger tanks (500+ liters) are preferred for long-term care. Unlike most triggerfish, the Redtooth is one of the more peaceful species, especially when introduced to a spacious environment and kept with other semi-aggressive or robust tank mates.

Although often considered reef-safe with caution, it may nip at small invertebrates and occasionally disturb coral placements. This species is an active carnivore, feeding on a variety of meaty foods, including frozen seafood, squid, krill, mysis, clams, and high-protein pellets.

The Redtooth Triggerfish is best kept by intermediate to advanced aquarists with large, well-filtered tanks and a secure lid, as it is a strong swimmer and known jumper. It’s also unique in that it may display schooling behavior in the wild and when kept in very large aquariums.
