Purple Tang

The Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum) is a stunningly beautiful fish known for its deep purple body and yellow tail. Growing up to 25 cm in length, it requires a tank of at least 380 liters with plenty of space for swimming and live rock for grazing. It’s a herbivore that feeds on algae and seaweed, which helps in maintaining a clean tank environment by controlling algae growth.

The Purple Tang is semi-aggressive, especially towards other tangs and similarly shaped fish. It can be territorial, so it’s best kept in a tank with only one tang or with other peaceful fish that don’t resemble it. While reef-safe, it may occasionally nip at corals or small invertebrates if not adequately fed. With stable water parameters and a varied diet, this fish can thrive in a well-established tank, making it a favorite among advanced hobbyists.
