FOXFACE RABBITFISH

The Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus vulpinus) is a brightly colored marine fish native to the coral reefs of the Western Pacific. Its eye-catching yellow body is paired with bold, dark facial markings and a uniquely shaped snout, giving it a “fox-like” appearance. Its peaceful temperament, hardiness, and algae-eating habits make it a popular addition to large reef or fish-only aquariums.

It can grow up to 25 cm and requires a minimum tank size of 300 liters, with larger volumes ideal for swimming space and territorial harmony. The Foxface is known for its shy but non-aggressive behavior and generally gets along with a wide variety of tank mates. However, it may act defensively toward other rabbitfish in smaller tanks.

This species is considered reef-safe with caution—while it typically ignores corals, it may occasionally nip at fleshy LPS or soft corals if not well-fed. As a primarily herbivorous fish, it should be fed a diet rich in marine algae, nori, spirulina flakes, and other plant-based foods, though it also benefits from some protein-based foods like mysis shrimp or enriched brine shrimp.

A distinctive feature of the Foxface Rabbitfish is its venomous dorsal spines, which it uses for defense. While not aggressive, it will raise its spines when frightened or stressed, so caution should be used during handling or maintenance.
