HYDNOPHORA CORAL

The Hydnophora Coral (Hydnophora spp.), commonly called Horn Coral or Knob Coral, is a distinctive large polyp stony (LPS) coral known for its fast growth, unique texture, and intense coloration—often electric green, neon yellow, or brown with glowing highlights. Its surface is marked by protruding skeletal ridges and fused polyps, giving it a jagged, almost armored appearance.

Hydnophora can grow in branching, encrusting, or plating forms depending on the species and flow conditions. While beautiful, it’s also one of the most aggressive LPS corals, capable of extending powerful sweeper tentacles and engaging in allelopathic warfare, making it essential to provide ample space from other corals.

This coral thrives under moderate to high lighting and moderate water flow, which helps maintain polyp extension and keep detritus from settling between its fused corallites. Though primarily photosynthetic, Hydnophora may accept fine particulate or microplankton foods when offered.

Because of its growth speed and temperament, it’s best suited for experienced reefkeepers who can manage its placement and potential for overgrowth.
